A Century of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić’s
Priče iz davnine (Croatian Tales of Long Ago)

12th– 15th October, 2016
in Zagreb, Croatia

The International Conference A Century of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić’s ‘Priče iz davnine’ is the central event in the celebration of the centenary of the first publication of Priče iz davnine (Croatian Tales of Long Ago, 1916) by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, the most famous Croatian collection of fairy tales. Scholars and experts from Croatia and abroad are invited to take part in the Conference in a joint effort to critically examine the various aspects of this unique prose collection.

Priče iz davnine is the most published and translated Croatian prose collection, a book that has for an entire century found its way to child and adult readers alike. The book has been translated into dozens of languages and is found in national libraries all over the world. Soon after the collection was published, and especially after it was translated into English only eight years after its original Croatian publication, its author Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić received international critical acclaim. Priče iz davnine has earned Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić as many as four nominations for the world’s highest literary honour: the Nobel Prize in Literature. In the context of Croatian cultural history she is also remembered as the first female member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (at that time called the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts). By creating an original fairy-tale world based on Croatian oral literature and the rich Slavic mythology, Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić has produced a multi-layered, heterogeneous and highly stimulating work which even today, one century after its publication, continues to attract the interest of readers, critics, educators, scholars and artists. Fairy tales included in the collection Priče iz davnine have been explored in different forms, adapted into different media, and have even found their place in contemporary hypertextual and virtual reality.

The Conference A Century of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić’s ‘Priče iz davnine’ (Croatian Tales of Long Ago) will focus on the following general topics:

  • Literary, historical and cultural aspects of Priče iz davnine
  • Literary and theoretical approaches to Priče iz davnine
  • Linguistic and stylistic aspects of Priče iz davnine
  • Priče iz davnine in a pedagogical and educational context
  • Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić’s opus in the context of European and world literature
  • Fairy tales: genre, theory, history

Official languages of the Conference are Croatian and English.
